Clean Water Victory! Landmark Court Decision Rules MASSHighway Water Pollution Violates Federal Law
In a precedent-setting decision, a federal court judge in May ruled that the Massachusetts Highway Department violated the federal Clean Water Act by failing to develop an adequate stormwater cleanup plan for its 2,500 miles of urban roads and bridges. The decision, by Judge William G. Young, stems from a lawsuit filed by CLF, Charles River Watershed Association, and Leominster Land Trust charging that MassHighway was not properly controlling and cleaning up polluted stormwater that flows off roadways into neighboring lakes and streams.
CLF's Chris Kilian and Cynthia Liebman led strong team of lawyers, interns and assistants in the case. We are deeply grateful to dedicated pro-bono team from Shearman & Sterling for their help. Check out photos of our legal team on Flickr.

Historic ocean management plan a national model for protecting marine waters
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick recently signed into law a landmark ocean management act to balance commercial and recreational use with wildlife protection. The new law will lead to a first-in-the-nation ocean management plan to guide all development activity, including renewable energy, in state ocean waters. The act comes on the tails of the recent draft report which details a grim reality of the region’s most fertile ocean habitats, Stellwagen Bank. Check out photos from the signing ceremony on our Flickr site.
