CLF Releases Climate Call to Action
Systematic and immediate changes to New England’s energy programs and transportation infrastructure are needed to meet the climate change crisis, according to a call to action released last week by CLF.
The report, New England's Downpayment on the Future: Five Steps in Five Years to Confront the Climate Threat, lays out a blueprint for five specific actions New England must take in the next five years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and curb global warming.
“Our region, like the rest of the nation and the world, is facing the greatest environmental threat of our era, demanding transformations at all levels of our society and economy that are proportionate to the scale of the problem,” said CLF President Philip Warburg. “CLF’s call to action lays out five bold steps that are realistic and commensurate with the scale and seriousness of the climate crisis. We can build healthier communities and grow a clean energy economy by engaging this challenge today.”

Region takes collective, critical step on curbing greenhouse gasses
The countdown toward the September launch of an historic auction of carbon dioxide emissions among New England states has begun. The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a global warming agreement by 10 northeast and mid-Atlantic states to cut power plant emissions, has released an auction notice that potential bidders must follow when the auction formerly launches on Sept. 25, 2008
"This announcement is an important signal that RGGI is real and that the historic first auction of carbon dioxide emissions will happen on Sept. 25 as planned," said Seth Kaplan, CLF’s vice president for climate advocacy. “We are confident that there are enough states offering enough allowances in the auction to create the critical mass needed to launch a successful auction."

"Dam Cam" to Capture Removal of NH's Merrimack Village Dam
For more than 270 years, the Merrimack Village Dam helped power saw mills, gristmills, a shoe factory and provided water for a chemical factory. No longer powering industry and scheduled for demolition, the dam has one last role to play - that of movie star.
Beginning this week, NOAA, in partnership with CLF, will capture live on camera the removal of the dam, opening up 14 miles of the Souhegan River from Milford to Merrimack, N.H., providing extensive habitat for river herring, Atlantic salmon, American shad and American eel.
