- Provide more travel options and make transportation more affordable. Passenger rail is a practical alternative to driving and flying and can help reduce the high costs associated with private vehicles -- costs that are creating a growing economic burden for individuals and families.
- Build vital, healthy communities and promote responsible economic development. Passenger rail investments, coupled with sound local planning, catalyze sustainable economic development as a much-needed alternative to highway-dependent sprawl.
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Transportation is the largest and fastest growing source of global warming pollution in New England. Investing in rail is essential to building a cleaner transportation system.

Investing in rail is critical to building a clean transportation system that will make New England a healthier, more economically vibrant place to live and work. Fortunately, President Obama and the U.S. Department of Transportation have set forth a vision for high-speed and intercity rail for the nation, and devoted significant funding towards the implementation of that vision. To capitalize on this historic opportunity, and to ensure our region isn’t left behind, the New England states must make rail their highest transportation priority and must work together to develop and build a rail system for our region.
